Botox & Fillers

Botox Treatments: Botox is one of the most commonly used neuromodulators. It is approved by Health Canada and made of purified proteins created from a naturally occurring bacterium, similar to the process in which penicillin is made. It is used cosmetically for the treatment of wrinkles that develop normally with age. The medication/protein is injected with a tiny needle in very small doses in order to locally relax facial muscles. It works by blocking a chemical release between nerves and their related muscles. Consequently, the muscles relax causing the overlaying skin to become flat and smooth resulting in a younger appearance.

A common concern for patients is the look of being ‘over done’ or ‘frozen.’ My goal is to conservatively determine that right dose and injection technique suitable specifically for each patient while maintaining a natural appearance and minimizing wrinkles.

Another concern for patients are the potential side effects associated with Botox. Neuromodulators have been used safely for over 20 years. With a medical grade injector, side effects are very rare, however, if they do occur they are usually temporary and localized to the area of injection. The risk for more serious side effects is rare and will be discussed during your consultation.

Some patients see results within a few days however it can take up to 1-2 weeks to see complete results. Results typically last 3-4 months depending on the patient.

Dermal Filler: When dermal fillers are injected under the surface of the skin, the gel mimics the naturally occurring substance by adding volume to the skin and smoothes out lines on the face or enhances certain areas, depending on the desired end goal. When we are young, our skin is smooth and elastic and it contains a lot of hyaluronic acid. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin gradually decreases which results in thinner, wrinkled skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of connective tissue in many areas of our bodies such as the joints, skin and eyes. It provides firmness, elasticity and water retention and as we age our skin becomes less elastic and dry causing diminished radiance. The molecules in dermal filler products in Canada are almost identical in nature to the HA humans produce. HA fillers are ‘water-loving’ so we recommend drinking lots of water after your treatment to maximize results.

The most common side effects of dermal fillers are swelling, redness, tenderness and mild discomfort at the site of treatment. These side effects typically last less than a week. Other more serious complications will be discussed at your consultation appointment.

You will see results as soon as the swelling subsides after your treatment, however, full results are typically achieved at 14 days. The results will last approximately 6-18 months depending on the location injected, product used and the patient.
